The Major Mitchell's Cockatoo is pale pink with white wings and tail, and a distinctive scarlet, tangerine and gold crest. The beak and feet are pale gray; eyes are dark brown in males, dark red in adult females.

The Major Mitchell's Cockatoo is named after Major Thomas Mitchell, who first described the birds: "Few birds more enliven the monotonous hues of the Australian forest than this beautiful species whose pink-colored wings and flowing crest might have embellished the air of a more voluptuous region."
