The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest flying parrot species. It is native to Brazil and is currently endangered.
Appearance[]
The Hyacinth Macaw is very large for a parrot - roughly 3 feet long and weighing up to 4 pounds. Its plumage is entirely a rich, deep blue, though the neck may have a gray tint. The skin around the eyes and beak is bright gold, with the bill is dark gray. Irises are dark brown to black.
Behavior[]
The Hyacinth diets on nuts and seeds. They have been observed using tools occasionally (ie, rocks and sticks to open things). They are often kept in captivity, though they are demanding, strong, and in constant need of stimulus. This makes keeping one in captivity a difficult job.
Endangerment[]
This bird is one of the many endangered parrots. The Hyacinth is strongly affected by illegal capture for the pet trade, as well as habitat loss. They are protected by law in Brazil and Bolivia, but smuggling continues to this day. Unfortunately, they are difficult to breed in captivity, but conservation efforts are still being made.
