Parrots are often kept as pets, and make great friends. However, we need to remember that many human household elements can put a parrot in danger. The following is a list of things that pose a danger to captive parrots.
Other Companion Animals[]
Dogs, cats, snakes, and other animals kept as pets can pose as a danger to birds. You should NEVER let a snake or a cat around a parrot, even under supervision, as both will likely attack your bird - and cats have bacteria in their saliva that can kill a bird almost instantly.
Some dogs, on the other hand, may become friends with captive parrots. Still, you should always keep close watch on both pssitticine and canine.
Toxins[]
In the average household, there are countless things that can poison a bird. It is a very good idea to keep pet parrots away from:
- Cleaning products
- Candles
- Avocado, rhubarb and raw onion
- Chocolate, alcohol and caffeine
- Salt, sugar, etc
- Air fresheners
- Paint, crayons, pencils, etc
- Bleach
- Hair spray, dye, etc
Vapor Danger[]
There is an EXTREME DANGER to parrots that is common in most households: vapors. Though it doesn't affect humans, gas emitting from the following objects when heated can kill a bird in minutes:
- Popcorn machines
- Breadmakers
- Waffle irons
- Anything labeled "nonstick"
Other Dangers[]
Do not allow your parrot access to wires or cables. These birds are inquisitive and will often explore the world around them with their beak, making the risk of electrocution relatively high.
If your bird does not have her wings clipped (or even if she does), it is a good idea to:
- Conceal mirrors and windows (ie, with the use of curtains)
- Cover toilet seats, filled sinks, and other open water
- Install screens for windows, and use air conditioning instead of fans
